I have always been of the mindset that, when it comes to training and preparation, less is more. If you’re feeling tired or have a nagging injury of some sort, the tendency is to just gut it out and get that session in no matter what.
1995 Ironman Triathlon World Champion Karen Smyers told me her philosophy during an interview years ago and I follow it to this day:
“You can’t get to the finish line if you’re too injured to start the race. It’s better to be 10% undertrained than 1% overtrained.”
Karen’s words of wisdom are always front of mind for me.
